About my current job
I teach psychology and I conduct research on the psychology of eating. I lead a research group comprised of doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers. We are interested in the role of cognitive and social processes in food intake and food choices and the underpinning biological mechanisms. I am currently involved in funded research projects with the Economic and Social Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. I am also Editor in Chief of the journal Appetite and Deputy Director of Research for the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham.
Fond memories of my time at EP
I have fond memories of time spent in the Department on South Parks Road and always felt at home there. As Undergraduates we would head from the lecture theatre or the library to hang out in the coffee area on the first floor. I loved how it was a friendly, shared space for both staff and students.
Did you have a favourite tutor/lecturer/prof, and how did they inspire you?
I remember some great free ranging tutorials with tutors including Marian Stamp Dawkins and Gordon Claridge. We might start with an essay question but then the discussions could spin off in different directions. One of the best things about the tutorial system was the having the opportunity to explore new ideas and have your thinking challenged. I was also privileged to be able to work with Nick Rawlins when I was a post-doc. His great intellect and knowledge combined with an infectious joy for research were very inspiring.
