About my current job
I am an artist, based in Brooklyn, New York, USA. My work explores how we understand human movement in public space and has been shown internationally in theatres, galleries, museums, urban centres and public spaces. I also serve as the Executive Director of the Association of Marshall Scholars, an education-based non-profit working to strengthen US-UK ties and the Marshall Scholarship. This involves directing a non-profit organisation and engaging public and private sector leaders and scholars in the US and the UK to exchange ideas and help advance understanding across a large range of fields.
Something important I learned during my time at EP
Don't give up! Use words with specificity. Don't assume. Articulate your questions clearly, and distill your findings from the evidence. Listen.
How did my education influence my career path?
My education provided a cross-disciplinary and hands-on foundation in both science and art. This has influenced my working practice, affecting the perceptual/mechanical/digital production of many subsequent projects. I continue to collaborate with scientists and artists and have come to understand the complementarity and critical importance of both approaches to problem-solving in my own work and in creating strong organisations and institutions.
Fond memories of my time at EP
I remember Lab Meetings on Monday or Tuesday morning in a tiny windowless room the size of a closet where I sat with Professor Kia Nobre, one DPhil student and one postdoc student around a small table and shared progress and feedback on our work, I also remember Professor Nobre's excitement unpacking the first headgear the lab received, which was designed to measure event-related potentials and testing the non-toxic glue and gear on each other. Finally, I have a memory of losing all my statistical analysis for one critical thesis experiment at 9pm or 10 PM and calling Professor Nobre in tears. She came into the lab the next day and sat with me for many hours, re-processing and re-analysing all the original files until we had recovered/recreated all that was lost.
Did you have a favourite tutor/lecturer/prof, and how did they inspire you?
Professor Kia Nobre inspired me with her intellectual rigour, discipline, ability to connect philosophical and physiological questions with clarity and deep sense of how neuroscience can transform our understanding of human behaviour and the life of the mind.
How did friends made during your time at EP influence your life?
I have lifelong friends from my time at EP who have remained close confidents, and deeply cherished loved ones.
Do you have a lesson or advice that you'd give to current students/researchers at EP?
Explore, explore, explore.
