About my current job
As College Research Fellow, I dedicate most of my time to research. In particular, I am studying how digital technologies like social media are impacting adolescent mental health.
Did you have a favourite tutor/lecturer/prof, and how did they inspire you?
Professor Dorothy Bishop is the one EP member that has shaped my life most, both during my time at EP and beyond. Her conviction to what she thinks is right has helped me learn to speak truth to power. Her dedication for helping those in less powerful positions than her has encouraged me to consistently do the same. I still miss sitting in meetings with Dorothy, seeing her cut through the nonsense and zero in on the truly important issues with remarkable ease, even when engaging in emotional and complex debates. She has been an inspiration to many researchers, especially those involved in the Open Science movement, and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to share a department with her during my graduate studies.
How did friends made during your time at EP influence your life?
I co-founded the global journal club initiative "ReproducibiliTea" with two other EP members (Sam Parsons and Sophia Crüwell) in early 2018. ReproducibiliTea now has over 100 different journal clubs in 25 different countries, and has received numerous prizes and awards. In doing so, it has helped hundreds of early-career researchers around the world create communities to support the improvement of research practices, something that makes me very proud. This movement has, however, also allowed me to make friends for life - and it is this that I am incredibly thankful for.
With the benefit of hindsight, do you have any advice you'd give your younger self?
Try not to compare yourself to other people. Progress is not linear, and sometimes good ideas just take time to develop.
Other reflections
I don't think I will ever forget the Tinbergen evacuation, when I ended up rescuing 6 office plants and carrying them through Oxford while it was gently snowing, while dragging my office chair behind me. A juxtaposition of complete chaos and wintery calm. Very bizarre.
